The Cold-Weather Camping Playbook

Stay warm, safe, and stoked when temperatures plunge. This is the CampMate blueprint for winter-ready adventures.

Warmth Starts with Mindset

Cold-weather confidence comes from dialing in your systems. Build redundant heat sources, layered insulation, and a bail-out plan shared with your campers.

Keep emergency contacts, check-in schedules, and winter driving notes written down and shared with your campers before you leave.

Layer Like a Pro

  • Base: Merino or synthetic to wick moisture. Avoid cotton entirely.
  • Mid: Active insulation such as grid fleece or synthetic puffy for movement.
  • Shell: Waterproof-breathable jacket and bibs; add a belay parka for long static moments.
  • Extremities: Double up on socks, pack backup gloves, and stash chemical warmers in a dry sack.

Engineer a Toasty Sleep System

Stack a closed-cell foam pad below an insulated inflatable to stop ground chill. Add a vapor barrier liner if temperatures dip below 10°F.

Remember to pre-fill hot water bottles before bed and vent your tent each morning to avoid condensation ice.

Fuel Like an Athlete

Plan calorie-dense meals you can cook with gloves on—think ramen plus dehydrated veggies and instant miso.

Stay on top of hydration. Cold, dry air increases respiratory water loss, and you may not feel as thirsty in cold weather, leading to dehydration. Set reminders on your phone if needed.

“The group that snacks every 45 minutes never hits the dreaded cold bonk. Keep the engine burning.”
— Skylar Monroe, Community Guide

Safety Plays for the Whole Team

  • Assign a frostbite buddy system during pre-trip planning.
  • Pack a closed-cell foam square for quick insulation whenever someone sits down.
  • Check snowpack, avalanche reports, and road status before you leave and keep your campers updated.

Forecast check

Check NOAA winter storm alerts before your trip and keep checking as conditions can shift quickly.
